What is AI’s role in your business? Have you defined that? Do your employees know how best to use AI in a way that will advance your goals and get your company where you need it to go? Do they know what not to do with AI? I think it’s really important at this point as AI is really accelerating into our organizations that you intentionally understand and assign AI’s role in your business. So I’d like to make a case for a job description, a general job description for AI in businesses that are gonna thrive through this AI revolution.
The Most Human Wins
And it starts with a hypothesis, if you will. We’ve already all seen the growth of AI in our communications, and it’s showing up in a lot of different areas, but that’s the one we’re seeing every day. Almost everybody is. And there’s a visceral reaction that’s coming from us looking at texts and emails and messages that are clearly not written by humans, that is making us hungry for meaning and making us hungry for that human connection.
This is just the tip of the iceberg. This will continue to happen, and I believe that B2B companies that maintain their ability to be perceived as authentic human beings doing the work with AI’s help, but showing up with real relationships for their customers that can trust them are the ones that are gonna stand out. Because there’s gonna be a lot of companies that don’t take that effort to make that happen and will be perceived as just another machine, just another robo device, message, service, whatever it might be. On top of that, employees are starting to have some resistance to AI. They’re seeing it as a threat to their job. And that’s because there hasn’t been a message that makes it clear that carves out for them what their role is. And it’s easy to see that AI or to think that AI is, when it gets good enough, strong enough, fast enough will replace them at some point. So all these resistance, uh, issues related to technology, AI create an opportunity for businesses that think this through and put AI in the right place in their business.
Make Room for Meaning
And that right place is to not let it invade everything you do, but to consciously focus it on things that are functional, things that increase the capabilities and the speed and the performance and the quality maybe of what you deliver, how you work, but don’t take away from the important connection and relationships that humans to humans have and create.
Let AI Do More so You Can Be More
So what I see as a high level definition of the job description for AI is the doer. Look for ways in your company for AI to offload your humans and take the work that frees them to do more things that require a human voice and a human face and a human reaction. And companies that do this are gonna have much less issues with contraction and removing people from their roles because they are in a place to gain from this productivity increase. And they’re gonna need all the help they can get from their humans to focus on this human meaningful part of their business. It’s gonna be messy, it’s gonna be challenging. There’s gonna be hard things, but there’s gonna be really big opportunities too.
So I encourage you to think now before things get too confused and calcified in your culture and in your business about what exactly AI is for in your business and what the humans are for too.
