I like to say that marketing is creating relationships between you and your prospects and customers. It’s that simple. Today I wanna offer you an alternative definition of marketing, and that is leadership.
Ideas
There’s several aspects of leadership and marketin and one is ideas. Thought leadership is a concept you’ve heard of. I like to think of that as idea marketing. It’s really this idea of in your space, your market, your industry, your collection of prospects having an understanding, being an expert, and having valuable insights and perspectives that make their lives better and solve their problems. You are leading the way with your ideas, which lead to business for your company.
Customers
Another form of leadership is with your prospects and customers. You aren’t their boss, but if your ideas and your value is strong and good for them, and you have expertise that they will value and can learn from and benefit from, then you almost owe it to them to lead them to the promised land to show them the way to improving their business or improving their their lives. And so in that form you can market to them by leading them to the solution that is beneficial to them. And that’s not selfish. That’s actually you being generous and giving to them value that your profit shows your value.
Employees
And then a third way that marketing is leadership, is the power of having your employees aligned around your mission, your true story, which is who you are, who you serve, and how you help them. When everyone’s rowing the boat the same direction, when everyone’s singing off the same hymnal everything multiplies. Your messages come out authentically and naturally and consistently in the market and all the different touch points that your prospects will find you and that adds up and resonates and creates attraction. Awareness isn’t about a really great campaign. It’s about the consistent, ongoing, coherent message of value that you provide to them over time. So learn how to be leader and you can actually improve your marketing in many different dimensions.
